I have learned that this happens 5 times throughout each day. The times are similar each day, but vary a bit as the exact time is determined by the position of the sun in the sky. The actual sound comes from mosques, but you hear it everywhere as there are so many mosques. It is even played in the malls and all the restrooms have attached prayer rooms. It's not like they all run in there the minute it sounds. I have only seen one woman actually in there praying.
